All's well that ends well

Oh boy!!!! What a match!!! This is the first thing i'm doing after literally biting out all the protruding nails from my fingers... super thriller that. Didn't miss a single ball of the Indian innings and was totally worth it!
Alas the sad part being Tendulkar's dismissal in the 90's ... AGAIN! I've never been a great fan of Sachin's... my fav being Rahul. But I've felt the deepest sympathies for the man who has really deserved each and every one of those hard earned 100's and a few more this time there in England. I just wish that he'll play the final one-dayer and finish off the series in grand style no matter how the series goes.... Let Sachin get the 100!

My First day at work!

I’ve been dreaming of having a job that I joined today! So I really have been looking forward to entering office for the first time as an employee … for almost a month now, I’ve passed by the building wishing I’d be a sitting in a cubicle inside it some day!

Why is it so special… hmmm for starters, I can walk down to office. Yeah I didn’t risk it today coz it was the first day. Took me 5 mins on my Honda Activa… home gate to office entrance!!! I was in so excited that I didn’t even want to park in the visitors section. But no amount of persuasion prompted the security guys to let me into the employee section without a badge… but they apologized instead… yeah, must have realized how jumpy I was about working at NXP Software. I’ve decided to walk to office from tomorrow… my daily doze of exercises … I can’t really stop grinning even as I type this post out.

Started the day with a 3 hr session of usually induction formalities. Practiced my signature around 50 times on 50 different forms… there were 2 others who joined with me. One of them was to join my team and the other was appointed to do very similar work as I had to in a different team. I really felt that the welcome was warm. The HRs really took time to see that we were comfortable. Now, it’s not the first time I felt this warmth. I had 2 practice interviews (at other companies) before giving this interview a shot last Wednesday. After a 2.5 hr technical grill, they decided I was the one. It was followed up with a nice team intro and I was really surprised when team members came to meet me immediately after the interview… after another 30 min session abt the company and structure and finding out where I’d fit in the best, I was taken to lunch. It was followed with another hour of HR interviews, the usual I should say, I am much better at this round that the techie ones. When I walked out of that place I knew I was gonna grin away to glory for the rest of the day. Sure enough I got a call and the letter the next day. But unfortunately it was a holiday on Friday and the pre enroll med tests delayed things by another 2 days… so it felt like ages before I actually felt employed.

The teams are very small, but the members are real value for money. I just watched how the guys interacted and went about usual business all afternoon. All I know is that I have to really be at my best to match any of their achievements. Just as good as they are individually; they sure compliment each other so well with their strengths. The business hours are usually. 9am-6pm, Monday through Friday, thanks to the transport service the company provides. But in those 9 hours (an hour or so for lunch an walk after that) I should believe it’s always work considering how much work is done. Naah, it’s just as much fun with people walking around cracking their smart jests, with the surrounding junta joining in the laughter ever so regularly. The CEO of the company called me into his chamber and spoke to me in such an informal manner that I was overwhelmed. I REALLY FELT GOOD! An ideal first day! No matter how I am going to feel about this place a few months later, this is a day to cherish.

Yeah a few more freebies from the HR along with a drinking water bottle and a calendar with quotes completed the goodie package for the day! I am so looking forward to beginning work tomorrow, my manger came walking upto me this afternoon and said chill out for the rest of the day and get to know people, and you’re here to work for the rest of your life anyway!!!!!!!! AMEN

Bangalored! (via chennai)

Some how i feel the story of my trip to Bangalore from Singapore is more fascinating than the trip Tioman isle... so i'll do this part first... so much chronology and free time.

Stage 1:
When i was to check-in my luggage, I noticed i was the only one without any check-in luggage. carrying only a backpack which weighed only 5 kgs. the clerk there was so shocked that she repeatedly enquired as to why i didn't have any check-in. Might have thought of me to be some kinda terrorist, coz nobody goes to Chennai on a budget airline without check in luggage. probably i created history. Infact she even asked me if i was on transit from the US!
As expected the Air India Express flight (which is a misnomer coz it took all of 6 hours in place of 3.5 to cover the distance) took off late. The day chose to land was a Tuesday and hence there was no Shatabdi at 5:30 PM. So i did settle in for the 9:30 Kaveri Express well ahead giving me a lot of time to kill.

Stage 2:
After abt 4.5 hrs, there was a stopover at Trichy, where suddenly the plane got emptied and people came in to clean it! crew change and all... was wondering if it would ever take off again. Finally, it took off after an hour, landed an hour late in Chennai at 2:30 PM. Luckily the weather was very pleasant coz of the rains.

Stage 3:
I had a very stereotyped view of Chennai until i met Mr L. Yeah I considered them to be just as dirty as the city. Now dont kill me for this... I'm a changed man now! So first thing I bought was mineral water. Lunch at the Golden Chariot was great... yeah except for the flies.... i kept flinging my arms over the table so often that it became too obvious to the hotel staff. Suddenly if i wasn't already embarrassed this waiter comes with a small swat which resembled an miniature tennis racket and starts swinging it around me. I looked up right into his eyes and he smiled showing me all his teeth. I said " boy, I am irritated with the number of flies inside ur A/c restaurant, but this is even more embarrassing." Promptly, still smiling he replied " Sir what to do, mango season!" Need i say more... I burst out laughing so loudly that the rest of the people in the restaurant wondered what the joke was. Then I ask for the ketchup bottle and the waiter goes to next table and almost snatches it from the next guy's hand. In the only restaurant around the international airport, there was only one ketchup bottle!!! I was charged a big sum for the alu gobi + egg fried rice! but the food was great! :)

Stage 4: after 4PM

Boarded an auto to Chennai Central... again the ride was very pleasant! loved the cool breeze blowing. Nice change from the aircon chill I'm used to in Singy. The moment i landed at the station I realised I had made a mistake. It appeared like the whole of Chennai's population was waiting in the station. Thanks to a derailed train, (of which i was warned abt in advance by a friend who had a crazy morning switching trains,) there was no train moving in or out of the station. I found a place near some platform to sit. i was in the 2nd row of chairs. both rows were filled with random junta. Then, an old couple arrives and the first 2 guys leave their seats for them. A minute later, a friend old couple of the 1st on arrives and chases away 2 more people. this goes on for a while and then its abt my turn. the old lady sitting beside me points out to a girl a little younger than i am and says "ladies ko seat do!" (Give the sat to the lady) I usually dont mind giving away my seat to a needy person, but this was the limit. It was almost an attack on poor people who were already seated . So i didn't budge. Just gave the poor old lady a dirty look.

A few mins after the entire gang vacated and I suddenly saw a 50+ aged lawyer occupy the seat next to mine. He went on talking about his family and trips and life.... I had lots of time to kill so i didnt mind. Life in singy is so different, that the 1st thing my mom asked me when she entered the train there was as to why ppl were so self involved. My sister went the extent of saying that her exam halls had more noise than the local singapore trains. Yeah I think SGP turns ppl to be self involved. seen it happen to a lot of friends. back to that lwyer, he was so interested in knowing abt me, and even went to the extent of asking me to show him a demo of my phd project! all done spent 2 hours and realised it was time i decided on taking a bus.

The nice lawyer directed me to the nearest travel agent and i picked up a tkt for the 10 PM bus to Bangalore after informing my folks at arnd 7. Met this funny guy in front of the phone booth when i went to call my parents. I was standing outside one waiting to make a phone call. suddenly this guy comes and squeezes in, in between me and the phone booth door. so i make a hand sign to queue up behind me. he inturn says something in tamil + hindi + english which kinda meant that he was there sometime before i was. somehow he starts a conversation with me and suddenly wants me to find a job in Bangalore for his daughter who was in Hyderabad!!! Ironically, I am looking for one myself at this very point!!!! (job i mean) ... man why do i always run into such people. Now his attitude suddenly changed and he wanted me to be ahead of him in the queue ... which btw had only 2 of us!

Ran into another character in the train tkt cancellation line ... I had a tkt which reqd a passport for confirmation coz it was an e-tkt. i knew i wasnt gonna get much in return. this guy wanted to buy it at full cost and convinced me to sell it to him despite knowing that no trains were leaving!! I didn't mind it at all...

So after all these events, me boarded the bus and reached Bangalore safely and on time at 5:30AM! With an experience to cherish.... 24 hours after i started my journey!

Happy happy joy joy

Things that make me feel that i am living and not just exisiting on earth!

1. A long awaited convocation and all the smiling people around you. People I've barely helped with tit-bits during courses remembering me and just wanting to take a pic to cherish the moment! Realising I did spread some joy after all and it was worth all the trouble :)

2. Singing the graduation day song 'Graduation Day-Friends Forever!' in unison.

3. Warm hugs from family and friends!

4. A trip to KL, Putrajaya and Tioman Islands in Malaysia which realises my ideal vacation! (Detailed post when i find some time)

5. People telling me how much they'll miss me when I'm gone :)

Yeah I'm all sentimental here.

Singlish Class???

I was walking around in the new School of Computing building at NUS, which used to be the Law School building... when i came across a door with this written on it!

Wonder if the room was used to train the foreigners (to be lawyers) to speak in the way the Singaporean judge would understand!

Imagine this conversation...

Lawyer: Death sentence can?? okay???

Judge: OKay.. can can la!!!

All rise la!!!!

(Sorry if u don't understand Sing-lish)

Now this feels like home...

Been a guy who watches sport a lot on TV ever since i remember.... so depriving myself of it for almost 2 yrs during my masters was one hell of a sacrifice. When I was looking for a new accommodation towards the end of last month i was praying that somebody would just give me a place with a TV, cable and of course my fav sports channels and yeah God does exist! Not only did he hear my prayers but in grand style.... imagine, there's a 53" projection TV (if ur used to say a 25" one then this is 4 of them placed together!!)at home with ESPN, Star sports and the Cricket Channel!!!! The 2 other guys i moved in with are just as crazy abt sport as I am. Watched most of the Wimbledon matches after ages... unfortunately missed the final boo hoo, watched the replay thought. British F1 race couldn't get much of that too... but did get a glimpse of the imp moments. che... why did I have to be so busy over the weekend and yeah now I cant wait for EPL !!!

Unfortunately the much awaited Ind-Pak ODI got washed out, was ready for it with chips and lying cozy on the sofa!!! Yeah, it just felt like home!!! Bring on the matches now....

Prosperity... that's what I would like to say!

I think mirrors in all the bathrooms in this world must be removed. All they do is show you how flabby u are :(. Everyday, u look at urself in one, that paunch makes u feel like a 40 yr old. I'm not saying it OK for me to have one even then... It's just I never realised when the tight set of abs worth showing off during college days disappeared under this protruding bulk of fat! Guess it's only gonna be a 'crunch'y way out!

Finally ...verity

Time for the truth: the response to this previous post
1 . True. Lived in the St. John's Hospital Quarters till I was age 7. Could see the planes land and take off from the HAL airport in Bangalore (was very different back then in the 80s) and wave at them like any other kid 'aeroplane tata aeroplane tata' ... always wishing i would fly one someday!
2. True. Was born premature(7.5 months). My grandma said i actually fit in her palm. :-)
3. True. I really did hate eating until I joined work a few years back. It's a very different story now though!
4. Very True! As absurd as this sounds, I had a very different idea of what is DONE! Until of course the pics and videos that they provided enlightened me. (Didn't take bio in PU).
5. True. Feel dizzy when i look vertically downwards from heights.
6. False! Surprised I'm sure. I did have those glasses. Will probably post a pic sometime. But It was only coz my mummy dear forced me to wear those big fibre frames instead of sleek metal ones. Her reasoning was that metal frames would heat up in the sun and cause burn marks on my nose. Only mums can come up with such things and still make u believe in them. Yeah all the girls i planned to hit on did run away at first sight!
7. True. No surprise here.
8. True. I think they are slimy, gross and mess up the whole place with poop.
9. True. He still boasts about it during friends meet-up days. Me though just like joining in the fun. I'm sure he'll give that another try if i let him do it again!

Ok ... one last statement... see if u can detect how much of it is true here

After UKG, during my summer hols I would roam around the St. John's Hosp Quarters area with a bunch of 5 guys (3 of them were 2 yrs older and other 2 were my age) and 2 street dogs (Jimmy n Andy), chasing chameleons and what we called back then 'King Chameleons' cause they were orange and black. At the end of the hols Jimmy died of rabies and my parents saw Andy jump on me a few days later. Had to take the anti-rabies vaccines cause of this incident beginning month of 1st standard. My love for dogs, nature, friend groups and hatred for lizards all started during this time!

Écoutez!

Finally.... RADiOVERVE the website that plays songs made only by independent Indian artists... an amazing collection of music (no bollywood, no hindi yet) ...

My favorites ...

  • There's a Konkani channel... finally a way to still keep in touch with my roots..
  • Even better a Gospel channel... man Benny Prasad(I adore thee), Swapna Abraham (that angelic voice... haven't heard better) just too good.
  • That not all... there are 6 different genre as of today...

The look and feel of the website is just great... To say I personally know (n taught) some of the ppl who made this place happen gives me a lot of pride :) Keep up the good work guys...

Random Thoughts...

Took the bus to the university alone this morning... as usual some random thoughts just passed by... the girl next to me was so engrossed in reading her book... and the guy next to me suddenly screamed out 'YES!' after he finished a call... to say the joy was shown all over his face would be an understatement. ... What happened next can only in techie terms be described as 'uncorrelated' to what preceded...

I happened to realise the no matter how anybody said the word 'yes' it was always written the same way... we never bother about the accent, expression, the length of utterance .... its just written as a plain 'yes'. Its just up to the reader to get a feel of what kind of 'yes' it was.
Yeah a pictorial description like a single cartoon makes an amazing difference in the way we perceive the 'yes' the author is trying to describe exactly. This is why i think reading a book is really much different from watching the movie based on the book. I watched 'Sphere' before reading the book and all i could imagine the characters to be when i finally read it were the same actors... (it is always a pleasure to think of Sharon Stone!!!) What in the world had happened to my sense of imagination?! we never realise this but there could be two people sitting right next to each other reading the same book and either of them has a very individualistic impression of what's happening.... The chances of 100 ppl watching the same moive in 100 different ways is definately a nothing! seriously all u see isTHE director's point of view!

So the next time you think about watching a movie based on a book and wanna read the book too, make sure u get the order right. Else its really not worth reading it at all...

The answer to the previous post will be up soon... no correct answers yet! :'(

IX point something....

When i restarted this blog i sure realised it wouldn't be long before someone tagged me.... didn't even have to wait for a month before pizzadude did... so after a revamp of the blog .... (too many links i clicked on looked like mine)... here goes... 8 truth's abt me and ondu sullu (a lie)

1 . I wanted to be a pilot as a kid... that too wanted to fly a passenger plane only!!! Thank God for making me a myopic adolescent, ppl still have faith in airlines today!

2. I weighed 1.7 pounds when i was born. I always believe in alleviating pain :)

3. hated eating as a kid.... and would come up with funny reasons not to. I once told my mom that the banana was too hot and would eat it after it cooled down the next day!

4. My sex education didn't start until i was in the 3rd yr of my BE... when a few scandalized friends did take it upon themselves as a challenge to educate me with the 'truths of life'! (nope... haven't tried it yet!)

5. I suffer from vertigo! but i also consider rock climbing to be one of the best things i've ever done. I live on the 19th floor of my building too!

6. I had this huge crush on a girl back in high school .... who was a big fan of BR Ambedkar... that's why i picked up spectacles just like the ones seen on his picture. Yeah, she never fell for me.... neither did any other girl till i changed them to metal frames which didn't happen for the next 3 yrs!

7. Wasn't allowed to go Bungee jumping coz i was underweight as a 22 yr old... (the min lmt was 58 kgs!)

8. I am scared of lizards!

9. A classmate of mine carried me on his shoulders and ran a 100 mtr dash just to prove why i was called '2D lamina' in engg college... :D i did enjoy the free 'ride'!

So are the lie detectors on work yet?

OKie if it's time for me to pass on the tagging then it's Lakshman's and Pills turn! Tripti, i'm not sure u want to... but here's ur chance to get tagged!

How late is too late...?

There have been times where i've given up on tasks way before te actual deadline... for instance, last sem I had this project to submit the next morning at 10AM... there was absolutely nothing working and I had almost given up hope.... 17th April to be precise.. I just went to a friend in the next Lab, as my final hope to salvage some pride and guide me in that crucial step that was eluding me all month... after all it could cost me a subject and plunge my self conidence down to great depths...

The guy worked on my project thru out the night.... finished it by 8AM while i lay staring at his lappie wondering how he had so much enthu to do somebody elses job .... not for 1 sec in those 11 hours did he give up!!! At the end of it all ... i left his house still awestruck.... wondering why God was so merciful. I couldn't get myself to present it ultimately, but got an extension and presented another piece of work and fortunately the prof was understanding enough. What ultimately came out of it .... i'll know in just over an hour from now!!!

All I could say then is "Thank You Saurabh"! Yeah, I did give him a big bar of choc too.... but truly, i promised my self 2 things on that day....

  1. Never to give up until its the end
  2. Help anyone if i could .... if i can make the difference then so be it!

On the same lines of thinking..... watch this video another friend sent to me..... The moral ofcourse goes just the same way....

I wonder if the calf did survive for too long after.... but yes it sure will give u the a great feeling.... The joy of living a life... Have a good one :-)

Friday... movie again...

All excited about the weekend, I landed at Jade cinemas again ... had a great time last week watchin Life in a Metro, and was hoping to feel just as good this weekend too. Again I went with the same gang, all of us hoping not to find our prof in the movie theater again! Our sem results are gonna be out tomorrow noon and we hoped to find some real cheer before we lamented for the next few days...

This time it was Shootout at Lokhandwala. I expected it to be violent, but didn't expect so much blood shed and gore!! Yuck it was ....Sadistic....So sad was the movie that I wished I had never come atleast 50 times within the first hour... n then left...It's probably the first time i've ever walked out of a movie theater before the end.... Just Pathetic!!! I was hoping I could say something nice at least ... but there really was nothing... Wish I could claim my 10 dollars back!!!

Bus... time hai kya...

Walk to a bus stop and u suddenly realise you might just have missed a bus... and the next one doesn't come until 20 more mins... Many a times i have just missed the bus ... and usually its on a day when i'm already late... 2 days ago i found this cool way of knowing when to land at the bus stop to catch the bus right in time.... If u travel using an SBS bus everyday, and dont mind spending a minute to check the net.... then this is the place to visit before you start from home or office...

SBS Transit IRIS Nextbus system

If you think u still have time left ... play some music, drink another cup of water... or just stroll arnd in ur living room... for all u know u might even have enough time to read another of my posts :-) happy travelling!

Ice Cream P(a)rata

There's this 24 hr Indian restuarant in Bukit Gombak Sgp... practically been having all my meals there for the past 2 months... turns out it'll be one of my fav places for a long time... Here's a delicacy from the place... if u dont know me then that's not me in the pic...

FYI: Paratha's are called Prata in the land of the Mer-Lion!

When Life gets Metro-ed....

Life in a metro... the movie...

I've been keeping myself highly busy just to divert my tottering mind... Life in a metro would hardly be a movie to watch in the current situation i am in.... but it really turned out to be worth every little bit...
If ur a guy u have to watch it with a bunch of like minded junta, hooting all the way to the end... the movie begins in a complicated way, and get too intense mid-way... KK is the usual serious self... then steps in Irrfan Khan and man is it fun!!! i died laughing and if not for him the moovie was typical madhur bhandarkar Page 3 types... Konakan Sen facing a similar role here too... But Shilpa shetty does act a bit too for a change. Dharmandre still cant act and Nafisa Ali is still Graceful!
I'm a phd student and went to watch it with 3 other guys (we shud be called geeks i guess :p) from the lab. Man what a surprize to find 3 of you profs sitting right behind u with families n all after all the hungama we had created!!! They didn't think we'ed be this type even in their dreams i guess... but surpirzingly they turned out to be so cool about it all....such fun was it.... i think i would not have had so much fun with any other bunch of ppl....

If ur a girl, i suggest u let ur guy go and enjoy this movie with a bunch of guy friends .... as for u, u can just get a disk and watch it ... coz the sentiments that are expected when ur arnd will totally ruin it for him.

The songs are just too good, i've been listening to them since this morn... just the same band all thru and its almost like they arrive from nowhere to suddenly relieve the tense mood in the movie... Don't go there to get emotional... not worth it!! Not everyone in a Metro leads such a life... but yeah u could say 'Life is a B****!' ... But I'd say, Life is what u want it to be! Live it or leave it, U wont get another!!!!

Singapore is another Metro so far away from Bangalore (My Home)... but I think Life in all metros is the same... just how u lead it!! Overall.... just watch the movie, realise how different it is, how differently u can see it and move on.....

No Kidding...

Was reading through an orkut profile of an old friend and saw this poem... although it's really all about him i thought it held true for most of us... me included... a tribute to u SNB!

For all the years that have passed through
I sit to think of time gone by
Of love i shared, of things i did i never dared
Of things which taught me, which bought me and those that caught me unaware

But here is a new day to hear and speak
To see and to be me
what the future holds God alone knows
In every happening his puzzle shows

No matter what cards are dealt to me
I promise to myself that i will make
the best of it for my own sake

For happiness and sadness are a part of life
I'm no different from people who
like to fight ...like to strive
To be the masters of their lives

The goal I choose
The path i use
Is what makes me
I Know I'm not perfect..as much as i want to be

This what i am ..this is what i want to be
This is all about me
Time to get to work !!

life is a roller coaster....

You wonder why things change ever so quickly in life... one month it looks all so bright and beautiful...your on a vacation, having fun with friends, endless entertainment and laods of time for everything.... then next you know u wish you have 48hr days.... all those long due projects, poorly written assignments and zero prep tests show the results... wonder if i am really good enough for a phd....

then comes along a very loyal friend... who has been around for a very short while but feels like I know him for ages. No matter what, he always finds the right words to say... this time though he said... 'Boy, as long as we are talking abt education and grades, how many ppl do you think have made it even this far ... ??' Viola!!! such confidence.... i immediately thanked him for that spirit raising comment, got to work and maaan... was it a productive day!!!

THANK GOD for friends What would i ever do without one in this wild world :-)

History repeats....

Never in my wildest dreams did i think I'll start my blog again.... it took me 6 months to post after creating the profile the first time... which of course lasted for about 6 more months before a complete frustu day prompted me to delete it all... and now I'm back again! (lets see how long this lasts)

Woke up this morning to find that i had a laptop at my disposal lying right there on my desk... yeah it's been a long wait and its still not even mine... just borrowed it for weekend from my boss ... yeah i have a very generous one. Won't be too long before i own one ... Its been on its way since 2 months. Thanks to the delivery delays!! First a credit card limit overshoot, then the Chinese new year and so on and so forth... man this is killing... staying so far away from home and deprived of the favorite communication (Y! rules). Nowadays i even daydream about working on a new laptop... WHERE IS IT?????
